Genesis 2:2-3 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

The first thing in all of Scripture that gets called holy is not a mountain or a temple or even a person. It is a day. And specifically a day where nothing was made.

Rabbi Abraham Joshua Herschel wrote a book called “The Sabbath” and in it he describes the Sabbath as a palace in time. He argues that great cathedrals were never built out of stone. They were built out of hours.

Our barn is this month’s feature on the Friend of Minnesota Barn’s calendar. We recently spent countless days renovating the barn to house our antique shop. It was a labor of love built out of several hours. We worked hard to achieve the reality of our barn shop. But today on this holy Sabbath, we rests and enjoy what we have made. One day of seven, wholly set apart, for glorious rest.
